Spring in the Smokies?

Sabbath morning drive through Great Smoky Mtn. National Park - 6.5 in. of new snow fell Fri. night at Clingman's Dome.  We camped in Pigeon Forge where it got down to 17 degrees Sat. night and was in the 20's Fri. night.  Glad for a heater in our trailer!

A spring display of daffodils with snowy mtns. behind in Cades Cove.

We gobbled down our potato salad, Bush beans, hot dogs, and energy bites in record time - too cold to enjoy this Cades Cove picnic area spot for long at just 39 degrees at noon!

We biked the Gatlinburg trail along the creek.

It's great living just 2 1/2 to 3  hours away from this park.

Sunday we went to Dollywood's Festival of Nations and enjoyed the Kingdom Heirs with the  possible baritone replacement for Steve French who retired last year.  This guy, Brian,  has a great voice, and is a police officer in Cookeville.  His dad sang with the group years ago.

Argentina's Divas - good on their instruments.
Canada's circus show called "Timber" performers were amazing, juggling hatchets and other crazy routines. We went to their show twice!

We loved our first camping experience in our new Casita.  We can't wait to get it out on the "open roads" headed west in June.

Skype Shots with Claire & Easton

I just got off Skype with Claire & Easton.  Carrie had them dressed in their new Treasure Island matching t-shirts that I sent them.  She brought out some hats for them to wear and what fun!

Easton did NOT complain when she covered his face with her big Blue Jays hat and put his smaller hat on HER head.  What a guy!  I hope he'll always be as tolerant of his big sister's shenanigans!  She looks so innocent.  Then she turned it around backwards on him. . . cute as ever.

These aren't as sharp but you can still enjoy the cuteness!

It's way toooooooo long before I get to see these sweeties again.

"Serenity in Miniature"

In the August 2014 Southern Tidings I read an article last weekend (I'm just a little behind in reading these monthly magazines) entitled "Serenity in Miniature" by Betty Kossick (the mother of an academy classmate of mine).  It told about "The Garden," a volunteer-built serenity retreat behind the Calhoun, GA SDA church.  There are more than 50 "structures crafted from tiny stones, pebbles, shells, pieces of glass, rocks, ceramic tile, cement, wire, and other materials to imitate their larger counterparts."  There are churches, houses, a castle, and a monastery. There are structures modeled after Notre Dame in Paris, Cinderella's castle, Dover Castle, and Bethlehem.  Some are as high as 9 feet tall. (Bethlehem above and below)

next to the replica of Notre Dame that stands 9-ft.

I loved the stained glass windows

The garden was started by two Calhoun church members and now many others are helping with the ongoing construction.

There are little roads resembling cobblestone with Bible verses etched in stone

Notice the white shells covering the roof of this monastery

"Think 'Europe on a small scale' to envision these works of art."

Dainty violets and other flowers were already planted through the gardens.

I was happy that Linda Kwan was here visiting to go see it with me just a couple days after I "discovered" it.  It surely must be one of Calhoun's best kept secrets.  I'm thankful Betty Kossick wrote the article that I finally found.  It was worth the trip to be sure.

We topped the morning off with lunch at an SDA-owned sandwich shop called Christian and Jake's Bistro (thank you Connie H. for telling me about it).  They have a whole page of vegetarian options on their menu and the place was hopping.  I would definitely go again.

Spring Break on Treasure Island

We spent Fri. night on our way to Treasure Island with Mom & Coleman at Milton Jenks' place in Zephyrhills.

The first morning was jacket weather for our walk.  After that we had low 80's for highs every day and nights in the upper 60's and low 70's.

the beach bums I hung out with all week

We had gorgeous sunsets each evening and couldn't quit taking pictures!  I severely limited what I posted.

The bonapart gulls are my favorite - looks like they have polka dots on their tail feathers.
Randy dispersing the gulls and videoing as he approached - he'll never outgrow that delight.
These were the biggest of the gulls - Carrie or Greg, you'll have to identify them for me.

Randy's favorite - they seemed to always have these "bad hair" days!

Enjoying the shade before heading out on the town with Mom & Coleman to Sweet Tomatoes in Largo.

See the ring swinging on the string?  Hooking that was the challenge.

welcoming committee at John's Pass

We enjoyed reading some good books during the week.

Mom and Coleman spent Tuesday with us on the beach.

one of our favorite things to do at the beach - feeding saltines to the gulls.

He GOT it!

They got a little too close sometimes!

Snagged another one!

After our morning walk on the beach

Thursday morning when we headed out Randy went back for the umbrella and a plastic bag for the camera since we looked at this ominous sky.  But we didn't get rained on - not a drop all week even!

The water was very calm till our last day when we had some surf.

Trying out Milton's new toy

What a lot of hours of fun Milton had with this metal detector.

too close, Ruthie?

The last night's sunset - the clouds obscured it but did add some nice color.

We can't take credit for building this, but it was picture worthy.

Inside a sand dollar

our feelings in a nutshell Friday morning

all good things must end. . .

Heading back from John's Pass on our Fri. morning walk - quite a nice hike of 3 to 4 miles.

We earned this relaxation time!

cooling off in the Gulf

Lots of folks from Ontario come to Suncoast Motel so they fly this little Canadian flag

Time to head back north
