Sixth Stop, across from Huntington Beach SP: Brookgreen Gardens

When reading about places to see in SC, these gardens were high on the list, and we were pleased to discover they were right across the road from Hunt. Beach SP where we'd reserved five nights. So we went there Sunday before checking in to the campground.

This is what you see from the road at the entrance.  Their brochure says "it's the finest outdoor museum of its type in the world and contains the largest and most comprehensive collection of American figurative sculpture in the country, displayed in a stunning garden setting, three galleries, and a visible storage and research facility. It contains over 2700 works by 425 artists!"

If you read this sign, you'll see that the couple who the state park is named after founded these gardens. She was a sculpter.  Their home (called Atalaya Castle) is a part of the state park that you can tour, for a price.

The Spanish moss on the live oak trees is kinda' cool looking we think, but we're glad it doesn't grow on the trees in our yard!

At the Lowcountry Zoo, you can see the native animals from SC's Lowcountry woods, swamps and waters.

The botanical gardens were not in bloom yet for the most part.  It was recently named one of the Top 10 Botanical Gardens in America.  When you pay for your admission of $18, the ticket is good for the next six days as well.  Maybe if we'd gone in again at the end of the week, we might have seen more in bloom.
